What Is the Gemstone Crab? The Complete OSRS Guide

July 2, 2026 5 min read

Everything you need to know about Old School RuneScape's Gemstone Crab: the AFK combat boss of the Tlati Rainforest, how the fight works, and the gems it drops.

The Gemstone Crab is one of the most talked-about additions to come out of Varlamore, and for good reason. It is a world boss with effectively infinite hitpoints, no meaningful defence, and a design built entirely around relaxed, near-AFK combat training. Whether you are a fresh account chipping away at your first levels or a maxed main topping up experience, the crab has quickly become a go-to training spot.

This guide breaks down exactly what the Gemstone Crab is, how the encounter works, what you get for beating it, and how to start climbing our community kill-count leaderboard. If you want the deep lore and stat breakdown, our full About page covers it too.

What is the Gemstone Crab?

The Gemstone Crab is a shared world boss that lives in the Tlati Rainforest in the far reaches of Varlamore. Unlike a normal monster, it does not really "die." Instead it has a health bar that many players chip down together, and when that bar hits zero the crab burrows away, sheds a piece of its shell, and reappears at another nearby mine.

Because it has huge effective health and very weak attacks, the crab is designed to be fought in large groups with minimal effort. You can stand in place, auto-attack, and rack up combat experience with very little clicking. That "set it and forget it" rhythm is why so many players have adopted it as their main training method.

Where do you find it?

The crab rotates between three mines in the Tlati Rainforest: the north, east, and south-west spawns. Roughly every 10 minutes it relocates to one of the others. The good news is that the cave network near each nest always routes you to the crab's current location, so you rarely have to hunt for it.

Getting to Varlamore and the rainforest for the first time takes a little setup. We wrote a dedicated walkthrough that covers every teleport and shortcut in our Gemstone Crab location guide so you can get there in the fewest clicks possible.

How the fight works

At a glance the Gemstone Crab looks simple, and it mostly is. But there are two mechanics worth understanding so you can maximise both your safety and your experience rates.

The quadrant attack pattern

The crab focuses its attacks on one quadrant of the area around it at a time. If you are standing in the section it is targeting, you will take damage; if you are not, you are safe. There is also a safe centre tile in the middle of the square it occupies. Attentive players reposition to avoid damage entirely, while true AFK players simply accept the occasional hit and bring a little food or nothing at all.

Because the crab's offensive stats are so low, most accounts take very little damage even when standing in the wrong spot. This forgiving design is exactly what makes it beginner-friendly.

Infinite health and relocation

The crab's health bar is shared across everyone attacking it. When the community burns it down to zero, the crab burrows and sheds its shell, then moves on. The shell it leaves behind is the real prize (more on that below), and it stays for 90 seconds before sinking into the ground.

Since the boss never truly dies, there is no respawn timer to wait on and almost no downtime. That continuous uptime is the core reason the Gemstone Crab is such efficient, low-stress training. We go deeper into rates and setups in our AFK combat training guide.

Rewards: mining the shell

When the crab is defeated, the 16 players who dealt the most damage are eligible to mine the shell it leaves behind. Doing so awards three random uncut gems, ranging from common opals and jades all the way up to the coveted uncut dragonstone.

You do not need any Mining level to loot the shell, but you do need a pickaxe in your inventory. The gems can be cut for Crafting experience, sold, or high-alched. For the full drop table and the odds of each gem, see our Gemstone Crab loot table breakdown.

Why players love it

There are three big reasons the Gemstone Crab has become a favourite:

  • It is genuinely AFK. Low incoming damage and no respawn timer mean you can train with minimal attention.
  • It is social. Everyone shares the same boss, so busy worlds feel lively rather than crowded-out.
  • It pays you to train. Most AFK methods give you nothing but experience; here you also walk away with a steady trickle of gems.

For ironmen especially, that gem income is a welcome bonus on top of the combat experience. If you are training on a restricted account, check the Ironman and Hardcore views on our leaderboard to see how you stack up against your peers.

Requirements to start

The barrier to entry is refreshingly low. The only hard requirement is completing the quest Children of the Sun, which unlocks access to Varlamore in the first place. Beyond that, you technically need no items at all to fight the crab, though a weapon you can auto-attack with and a pickaxe for looting are strongly recommended.

If you want to squeeze out more damage (and therefore more shell loot), our gear and setup guide covers budget-to-max loadouts for melee, ranged, and magic.

Track your progress and get verified

Once you are farming the crab, why not make your kill count count for something? Our community keeps a verified leaderboard of the highest Gemstone Crab kill counts in the game. Here is how it works:

  1. Rack up your kills at the crab.
  2. Take a clear screenshot showing your character name, kill count, and account type.
  3. Submit your kill count through the site.

Every entry is checked by hand before it goes live so the rankings stay legitimate. You can read exactly what we look for on our verification page. Got a question or spotted something off? Reach out any time through our contact page.

The Gemstone Crab is proof that training does not have to be a grind you dread. Set up, settle in, and start carving your name into the shell of legends. When you are ready, claim your spot on the leaderboard and see how high you can climb.
